The Havana brown is a relatively new breed created by humans. The first HAVANA BROWN emerged in England in the 50s, produced by a small group of breeders of Siamese goal. Their object was to creat a cat "wholly chocolate brown", with a Siamese traditional type, with bright green eyes as possible, like the seedlings or the first leaves of the trees. "
These breeders have worked with a chocolate point Siamese cat, an house black cat, chocolate gene carrier and introduced the Russian Blue from the third generation. At the time when genetic testing did not exist, their work was especially difficult, and the program met little interest. The breed was still recognized in 1956, but already two groups were formed, with distinct development goals: some wanted to keep the type médioline of the Siamese, while others favored a crossing with an oriental chocolate, prefering a greater genetic diversity but compromising the type. The havana oriental which still exists today in britain followed this path, so that the "havana" no longer exists as a breed in its own right but as an oriental color. It should be noted however some breeders efforts to return the type "original", approaching havana brown we see today in Europe.
In parallel, the breed has seen a tremendous development in the United States. the first subjects imported into the new continent were all English cats "traditional." you can now find these first cats in all of our HAVANA BROWN pedigrees. The majority of breeders in the United States have sought to preserve the "traditional" type, it is endorsed by the breed standard, recognized in 1964 by the American CFA. Most American breeders have realized that the survival of the race depended on a program reasoned "outcrossing" (a cross between a purebred HAVANA BROWN with an oriental or an american shorthair, or an house black cat), and the majority of subjects exhibit today are the product of this process. The breed is uncommon in states countries (about 300 havana brown), but even more developed than in Europe. All subjects living in Europe are imported from usa and CANADA.
In France, the havana brown has had a turbulent history. race has always been extremely confidential (less than 10 subjects). After a brief attempt to reintroduce in the 80 to 90, no more HAVANA BROWN was exposed in France (or in Europe) until the 2000s. This is the will of a single breeder, "Claire RASSAT" that the first HAVANA BROWN came back in France, imported from canada, and after, in 2002 one female from the United states. The number of representatives of the breed is forty, through the joint efforts of Claire Rassat and Carine Blanc Delmas. The havana brown is one of the rarest breeds of Europe and its future now rests on an ambitious development program supported by a small group of breeders in France, in Italy and in England, with the support of the united states.
